The high nutritional value of avocados makes them ideal for hunger relief programmes, and during ‘normal’ times Westfalia is a regular contributor to feeding schemes for local schools and nursing homes. During the COVID-19 crisis, the Group’s South African operations have stepped up support by donating avocados to programmes such as the Haenertsburg Relief Initiative, in partnership with Choice Trust and Rotary, and to NPOs like Eden Angels and Come to the Centre of Help, which feed 550 needy families.
Relief programmes initiated by retail customers are also supported, including those by Shoprite Checkers and Freshmark. Through the month of May, Westfalia partnered with Food Lovers Market for its World Hunger Month campaign. With every box of avocados sold, money was donated to the Food Forward SA campaign, which assists in providing meals to vulnerable people.
In South America, Westfalia Peru has donated over half a ton of avocados to their communities, including to NPOs like Peru Childhood Association, Inspira, and Kantaya, and to the Peruvian police force. Despite the many challenges facing us during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Avo Experts continue to support those in need around the world.
